Description of the meeting
ZAGREB Dec 6-10, 2021: the 1st short-term exchange of groups of pupils and teachers, Trgovačka škola in Zagreb,"Traditional and Regional food".

20 foreign students, 8 were hosted in families. Due to Covid-19 measures, the host school limited the number of Croatian students participating, 25 students participated in project activities.

We met the school's staff: the director of the technical school and teachers. 1 Croatian teacher teacher, 3 were actively involved in the exchange activities. 9 teachers, 2 headmasters from 5 partner schools came to Zagreb. The activities were attended by parents of the host school students, owners of regional companies, and employees of the Museum in Kumrovac.

5 working days:

    Students prepared presentations about their home towns and the regional/ traditional food. Guest students brought examples of traditional food while hosts offered Croatian traditional sweet spread. During St Nicholas Day, the hosts presented traditional custom of gifting children with sweets in their boots by preparing gifts in small cloth boots/socks. We finalized the project logo activity by voting, using Google Form tool.
  1. In mixed groups students participated in a scavenger hunt activity by using Actionbound mobile application to learn about Zagreb. They have known a myth of Zagreb’s name, the tradition of selling farm products on Dolac Market, also of street chestnut sellers, places of worship, the tragic stories of medieval “witches”, along with taking a ride on the funicular and walking along historical streets of the Upper Town. Also, students visited the Museum of Chocolate to learn about the history of chocolate in Europe and Croatia.
  2. The Old Village Museum in Kumrovec is a traditional crafts centre where students were able to see various ethnographic collections of old crafts and buildings. In the workshop “From grain to bread” they made their own bread.
  3. During a visit to Trakošćan Castle we experienced the history of Croatian castle, as well to visit picturesque Varaždin town with a Christmas Fair. Since December 9 is the EU Flag Day, we marked it with a Kahoot quiz about the flag and the European Union. Visiting the family business Grešna pilnica with a traditional lunch and presentation of an ethno museum.
  4. We took part in the honeybread workshop in Samobor with the creation and decoration of their own licitar, the craft which is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list: Oslaković and ARKO. Before the final dinner, guests could see traditional Christmas decorations and toys in the Zagreb Crafts Fair in front of the restaurant.


  5. Results: presentations, evaluation forms, the project logo, the project Instagram profile, 6 videos on project YouTube channel.

    Methodology: working in groups, scavenger hunt, cook workshops, tour guides, Google Forms, mobile applications, discussions, visiting local companies, project meetings, meetings with experts.



How did the participation in this activity benefit the involved participants?

HOST SCHOOL
establishing international cooperation; increasing in managerial, organizational competences; strengthening cooperation with local institutions/ authorities in Zagreb; creating a positive image of the school in the community and education by European dimension.
School was decorated by decoupage technique and traditional winter motifs, Christmas decoration and licitar hearts: UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list, indigenous Croatian souvenir. Guests received gifts from Kraš, drink bottled water Jana and Jamnica, Cedevita.
